The Excavator Operator is responsible for operating and controlling excavators and associated heavy machinery to perform earthworks, excavation, backfilling, trenching, loading, grading, and related activities. The operator must ensure safe, efficient, and precise operation in accordance with project requirements and safety standards.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Equipment Operation
Operate excavators (various sizes) to perform excavation, trenching, leveling, grading, and loading works.
Prepare the machine before operation (checks for fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid, tire/track condition).
Dig trenches and foundations to specified depths and dimensions as directed by the Site Engineer.
Load materials such as sand, gravel, aggregates, and debris into dump trucks.
Perform rock breaking using hydraulic breakers (if applicable).
Assist in backfilling, compacting, and trench preparation.
B. Site Coordination
Follow instructions from the Foreman and Site Engineer regarding excavation lines, levels, and safety zones.
Coordinate with banksmen, spotters, helpers, and truck operators to ensure smooth workflow.
Work in restricted areas with precision to avoid damage to utilities, structures, and personnel.
C. Safety & Compliance
Follow all HSE regulations, site safety requirements, and traffic routes.
Conduct pre-operational and post-operational safety checks.
Use seat belts and maintain safe operating speeds.
Immediately report accidents, hazards, or near misses to the HSE Officer.
Maintain safe distance from workers, overhead lines, and underground services.
D. Machine Care & Maintenance
Clean the machine daily and ensure proper functioning of brakes, levers, controls, and hydraulics.
Report mechanical issues, breakdowns, or maintenance needs to the Equipment Supervisor.
Ensure proper fueling, lubrication, and daily inspections.
Prevent misuse of machinery and avoid unnecessary idling.
E. Documentation
Complete daily equipment log sheets, fuel records, and inspection checklists.
Assist with maintaining service records and breakdown reports.
3. Minimum Requirements
Education & Experience
Minimum 3-5 years of experience operating excavators in construction environments.
Valid UAE Heavy Equipment Operator License (3 or 8 depending on machine type).
Experience in utilities, roads, infrastructure, and civil works is preferred.
Skills
Ability to operate various excavator types (chain/track, wheel excavators, mini excavators).
Strong coordination and precise control.
Knowledge of excavation safety, trench work, and equipment handling.
Ability to understand site markings, drawings, and instructions.
Physical Requirements
Fit to operate machinery for long hours.
Able to work in outdoor, dusty, and hot construction environments.
