Job Description

MUST HAVE ED EXPERIENCE - ADULTS DEPARTMENT Under general direction, provides clinical and educational support to the ED Department nursing staff. Assumes primary responsibility for the development, implementation and evaluation of orientation, education and skills training programs of staff. Supports clinical practice within the hospital. 2. RESPONSIBILITIES The following responsibilities are to be interpreted in compliance with the Agreement:
  • Diagnoses learning needs based on assessment data. Prioritizes identified needs, designs education to meet needs.
  • and evaluates teaching. Redesigns programs based on evaluation results.
  • Plans, implements and evaluates educational and clinical programs to meet the learning needs of the ED Department nursing staff including orientation, clinical teaching and in-service. Develops and reviews instructional materials. Maintains program records.
  • Participates in the performance and skills assessment of staff. Develops skills assessment programs. Certifies staff in specialized skills.
  • Communicates and consults with other health care disciplines. Acts as a clinical resource in area of specialty.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines in providing unit specific and hospital-wide educational programs. Participates in clinical committees and working groups.
  • Acts as a clinical role model and resource for staff and nursing services in the area of expertise. Participates in educational and clinical audits. Participates in Quality Improvement projects as a project leader, facilitator or team member.
  • Participates in the development, communication and evaluation of standards, procedures and protocols. Participates in selected nursing research activities. Facilitates the education process to implement changes in clinical practice.
  • Conducts education workshops and conference sessions for ED nursing staff. May present papers at conferences, and contributes to rounds and workshops.
  • Ensures orientation, professional development and continuing education programs are developed for all ED nursing personnel.
  • Ensures there are evidence-based standards, procedures and protocols in place to direct the delivery of nursing care.
  • Participates in patient education initiatives through review and development of instructional materials and individual or group teaching.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship and ongoing communications with medical staff and other department heads.
  • Ensures the Department / Clinical Unit Manager is informed of and aware of significant events and activities in the area(s) of responsibility.
  • Ensures ICML is is informed of and aware of significant events and activities in the area(s) of responsibility and ensure collection and compilation of all documentations, IP and other relevant information about ICML activities within the Department as may be required.
Provides input to the monthly reports to be produced by the Clinical Director to the Project Manager and on the activities of the Department with particular emphasis on the activities of the Department for the preceding month highlighting areas of success, areas of deficiency and forecasting possible future encumbrances including laying out the steps for overcoming the same with the aim of providing safe and efficient healthcare services;
  • Generally has a duty of care and works with and cooperates fully with the Project Manager in the implementation of all aspects of the Agreement with the client;
  • Performs other professional duties as may be assigned within his/her scope and ability.
3. DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY Autonomous within the Department of Nursing Educator role responsibilities, using allocated resources driven by the controlled budget and under the guidance of the ED Nursing Unit Manager and Director of the Hospital. 4. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS Internal ED Nursing Unit Manager, Director of Nursing, Practice Development Nurses, Charge Nurses, Nurse Educators and other Clinical Educators, Physicians, health professionals and administrative personnel External Patients, families, visitors, Hospital staff, external health professionals, general public and education institutions 5. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE ROLE Education
  • Graduate from an accredited Nursing program of a minimum duration of three (3) years
  • Post Graduate qualification relevant to practice area/education (or working towards same) desirable
  • ACLS certification desirable
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Experience
  • Minimum three (3) years recent experience in nursing with at least one (1) year in area of specialty in clinical teaching preferably in a tertiary hospital
  • One (1) year experience in clinical teaching
  • May consider an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Language skills
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Ability to understand and communicate clinical concepts and terms

Exposure to quality projects desirable Demonstrated knowledge of research methodology, practices and techniques. Research participation desirable Experience of needs assessment Understanding and practical experience of service evaluation Good knowledge of MS Office applications including Word.
