Operate a diesel vehicle to transport cargo, such as goods or fuel, to designated locations.
Inspection and Maintenance:
Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to check for mechanical issues, fuel, brakes, and lights, and ensure the vehicle is in good working order.
Safety and Compliance:
Obey all traffic laws and federal/state regulations, maintain a clean driving record, and report any accidents or violations.
Cargo Handling:
Load and unload cargo, ensuring it is properly secured, balanced, and delivered accurately.
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate logs of mileage, fuel consumption, delivery details, and working hours, often using electronic logs.
Communication:
Coordinate with dispatchers and other personnel using two-way radios or other devices to manage routes and delivery schedules.
Customer Service:
Interact professionally with customers at pickup and delivery points.
Requirements
License:
Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with endorsements as required by the specific vehicle and cargo (e.g., Class A for heavy-duty trucks).
Experience:
Typically requires at least two years of experience driving heavy-duty diesel trucks.
Driving Record:
A clean driving record with no major violations or accidents is essential.
Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of safety regulations, defensive driving, and the ability to operate and maintain diesel trucks and their equipment.
Physical Ability:
Ability to lift, push, and/or pull items of a significant weight (e.g., 75 lbs), as well as perform physical tasks related to loading and unloading.
Additional Requirements:
May require additional certifications, such as a medical card or a TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) for port work.
