Job Description

The Opportunity
The prime role of the Dean of Faculty is to provide strong academic leadership. The role holder provides professional leadership, pastoral care and management of the Faculty in order to secure high quality teaching, the effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all students.

The Responsibilities
Leads, manages and develops the department to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities.
Exercises leadership, demonstrates vision, and empowers others in order to deliver the agreed departmental strategy within the Faculty.
Models and promotes best practice in teaching and learning within the Faculty
Promotes the development, implementation and evaluation of teaching and learning strategies to maximize student outcomes
Monitors and evaluates all aspects of the work of the Faculty and responds appropriately to emergent issues ensuring that students are supported in their learning journey
Instills high expectations where faculty develop agreed schemes of learning, understands the requirements of examination syllabi, and meet assessment deadlines
Promotes planning and practice focusing on learning for achievement where active learning strategies engage and motivate students
Strategically, oversees student progress in the faculty (including the use of data) and actions appropriate interventions
Promotes cross-curricular dimensions and the development of cross-curricular functional skills: literacy, numeracy and digital literacy
Ensures that responsibilities are spread out across the Faculty to maximize provision and student outcomes, taking into account the skills and qualities of faculty and their professional standards
Advises and supports the faculty, providing clear feedback and support strategies where appropriate to become more effective
Leads the Faculty appraisal process including the setting of objectives in accordance with the University Appraisal Process
Inducts, supports and monitors new staff in the Faculty, mentors and encourages co-operation, collaboration and teamwork.
Ensures that best practice is disseminated regularly and routinely across the Faculty and that staff promote learning and share high quality resources
Ensures that University HR policies and procedures are implemented.
Ensures that staff performance is managed appropriately and that fair workload allocation processes are in place.
Provides leadership in the recruitment, appointment, and retention of faculty members.
Arranges effective and equitable distribution of faculty responsibilities, including teaching duties and committee assignments.
Evaluates and counsels faculty members concerning the performance of their duties.
Encourages and mentors teaching, scholarly activity, and professional development.
Initiates, in consultation with the appropriate faculty committee recommendations, appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure, and dismissal in accordance with University policy.
Endeavors to maintain faculty morale by reducing, resolving, or preventing conflicts.
Makes salary recommendations in accordance with University guidelines.
Organizes and coordinates the departmental faculty and staff in developing, implementing, and evaluating short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, standards, and programs.
Manages departmental resources, including the budget, in accordance with University guidelines.
Supervises the departmental support staff.
Ensures all staff have access to the necessary support to enable them to contribute fully and develop their skills and experience. Engendering and fostering a culture of excellence, cooperation and respect both within and beyond the department.
Makes effective use of all staffing resources and seeks out opportunities for collaboration and joint working with others beyond the department and beyond the Faculty.
Ensures a safe and healthy environment for both staff and students, to include full compliance with health and safety requirements

The Requirements
Technical Competencies
Credible within their academic discipline.
Excellent leadership, motivational and people management skills with a track record of building high performing teams.
Experience of developing and managing relationships with a wide range of external partners including professional bodies, government, funders, business, other education providers, third sector organizations and local authorities.
Evidence of strong intellectual capability; able to operate within a complex, structured yet challenging environment and motivate highly skilled and qualified individuals
Behavioral Competencies
Education and Qualifications
Educated to Doctorate degree in a relevant field or have extensive relevant educational experience.
The role holder will have the ability to inspire and motivate others and will be an excellent communicator with the ability to engage individuals from diverse backgrounds. Finally, the role holder will use leadership in coaching, empowering and managing the performance of people in order to realize potential, and will be capable of forging positive relationships with senior members of academia, government and industry.
Experience
Minimum 20 years of Academia experience with at least 5 years of experience at the Dean level
