Job Title: Crane Operator
Reporting To: Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) / Toolpusher
Location: Offshore Drilling Rig (Crane Cab)
Rotation: Typically 14/21 days on, 14/21 days off
1. Overview:
The Crane Operator is a highly skilled and certified professional responsible for operating the rig's cranes for all lifting operations. This includes moving equipment, supplies, and personnel between supply vessels and the rig, as well as handling loads across the deck. The role is one of immense responsibility, as a single mistake can have catastrophic consequences. Precision, patience, and constant communication are paramount.
2. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lifting Operations: Safely and efficiently operates pedestal cranes for all cargo transfers, platform supply vessel (PSV) operations, and internal rig moves.
  • Pre-Lift Planning: Participates in pre-lift meetings to review lift plans, assess risks, and understand the weight, center of gravity, and rigging of all loads.
  • Equipment Inspection: Conducts pre-shift and periodic inspections of the cranes, wire ropes, hooks, and other lifting equipment, reporting any defects immediately.
  • Communication: Maintains constant and clear communication with the banksman (signalman) using hand signals and radio communication.
  • Personnel Transfer: Operates the crane for personnel transfers via a man-riding basket, adhering to the strictest safety protocols and weather limitations.
  • Logistics Support: Works closely with the materials coordinator and other crew to ensure supplies are moved to the correct locations in a timely manner.
  • Record Keeping: Maintains logs of crane operations, maintenance, and inspections as required.
  • Adherence to Procedures: Strictly follows all company procedures, lifting manuals, and dynamic lifting protocols that account for vessel motion.
3. Qualifications & Skills:
  • Certification: Must hold valid and recognized crane operator certifications for offshore pedestal cranes (e.g., OPITO, LOLER, or country-specific standards).
  • Experience: Several years of experience as an offshore crane operator.
  • Skill: Exceptional hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and a steady, patient approach to operating machinery.
  • Situational Awareness: High level of awareness regarding weather conditions, sea state, vessel movement, and the position of personnel and equipment on deck.
  • Communication: Excellent and unambiguous radio communication skills.
  • Safety Focus: Uncompromising commitment to safety, with a deep understanding of load dynamics and lifting best practices.
