Job Summary: The Contracts Engineer in the Oil & Gas sector is responsible for the preparation, negotiation, and administration of contracts related to exploration, production, and development activities. This role ensures that all contracts are compliant with industry regulations, align with corporate strategy, and manage project risks. The Contracts Engineer works closely with project teams, clients, subcontractors, and legal departments to ensure smooth contract execution throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
Contract Development and Management: o Draft, review, and negotiate contracts for procurement, services, construction,
and engineering in the Oil & Gas sector, ensuring compliance with local and international regulations.
o Prepare contract documents, scope of work, terms and conditions, and project specifications in coordination with the engineering and legal teams.
o Assist with the preparation of tender documents, bid evaluations, and contracts for major contracts in upstream, midstream, or downstream oil and gas projects.
Contract Negotiation: o Engage with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to negotiate contract terms,
ensuring that the company's interests are protected and risks are minimized. o Negotiate variations, amendments, and extensions to contracts as needed,
ensuring smooth and cost-effective project execution. Risk Management and Compliance:
o Identify potential risks (financial, legal, operational) associated with contracts and mitigate these risks through strategic contract terms.
o Ensure compliance with applicable industry regulations, environmental standards, and safety protocols.
o Advise on performance guarantees, insurance requirements, and other safeguards to protect the company's interests.
Contract Administration: o Monitor contract performance and manage the day-to-day administration of
contracts, ensuring both parties meet their obligations. o Handle changes, variations, and claims during the project lifecycle, ensuring
proper documentation and approvals are in place. o Maintain up-to-date records of all contract-related documents, including
correspondence, amendments, and financial transactions. Collaboration with Project Teams:
o Work closely with project management teams to align contract terms with project schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
o Provide contract-related guidance and support to project teams, including handling disputes, delays, and change orders.
o Liaise with procurement teams to ensure timely delivery of materials and services according to contract specifications.
Dispute Resolution: o Address and resolve contract disputes between parties, including managing
claims and facilitating negotiation or arbitration when necessary. o Support legal teams in resolving major contractual issues and claims, ensuring
the company's legal rights are preserved. Reporting and Documentation:
o Prepare and submit regular reports on contract performance, risks, changes, and milestones to senior management.
o Ensure all documentation related to contract performance and changes is archived and readily available for audit purposes.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Law, Business Administration, or a related field. Postgraduate qualifications or certifications in contract management are advantageous.
Experience: Minimum of 12 years of experience in contract engineering or contract
management in the Oil & Gas industry (experience in upstream, midstream, or downstream preferred).
Industry Knowledge: In-depth understanding of Oil & Gas industry contracts,
including procurement, construction, and services agreements.
Skills: o Strong knowledge of Oil & Gas project life cycles, including EPC
(Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and service contracts. o Expertise in risk management and the ability to assess contract-related risks in
complex, large-scale projects. o Exceptional negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills. o Proficiency with contract management software and Microsoft Office Suite
(Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Certifications: Professional certifications such as CPCM (Certified Professional Contracts Manager), PMP (Project Management Professional), or MRICS (Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) are beneficial.
