Job Description

Purpose and Scope of the Job

Directs and supervise activities within the histopathology unit and related activities in other patient care areas. Reports to and advises the Laboratory head of department on matters relating to the operation of his unit. Applies the newest scientifically-approved approaches for the delivery of patient care.

Main Duties and Responsibilities/Performance Standards

Performs supervisory functions at the unit level as established by the Hospital Management.

Co-ordinates and directs the overall activities of his subordinate physicians, technologist & clerks to ensure that administrative and professional standards of medical practice are maintained.

Handles administrative and operational matters related to the activities of the histopathology unit, ensures efficient and appropriate use of resources, plans for a continuous growth of its market share, takes part of the marketing activities for its services, and consults with Laboratory head of department as required

Answers to all queries from the general administration, medical administration, doctors and experts from the Ministry of Health.

Responsible for compliance with regulatory requirements, whether those established by Ministry of Health, medical policies and procedures and to highest professional standards of practice.

Assesses the need for and develops and implements new policies and procedures, following their approval by the Laboratory head of department & quality department, that guide and support the provision of high quality of professional care

Takes responsibilities connected with laboratory testing protocols and quality practices ensuring patient's safety and satisfaction as the absolute goal.

Introduces new tests, and establishes liaison with referral laboratories regarding tests which cannot be performed in-house for several reasons, and ensures proper referral practices by department staff

Responsible for selection of technologies based on best practice and validation of newly introduced methods based on objective performance characteristics

Responsible for continuous personnel development of Laboratory staff.

Responsible for all diagnostic work and queries that are requested by other doctors working in different clinical areas

Revises, updates and enriches the different advisory services provided by the histopathology unit to its different clients, as the choice of examination, use of services, and interpretation of results

Participates actively in related hospital committees

Ensures that his related committees and unit meetings are held at appropriate intervals and that appointed members attend

Co-ordinates with the hospital infection committee task force helping them in surveillance protocols, strategic decisions and regular operations

Actively participates in the organization’s activities designed to attain accreditation by the Accreditation Canada and/or other appropriate accreditation agencies, and directs all unit members to do the same.

Participates in the orientation of new physicians to the hospital and its administrative and professional requirements as well as to the organizational culture.

Responsible to provide patient and family-centered care.

Ensures quality and patient safety practices are followed.

Promotes inclusive health by providing equitable and accessible care to patients and families with special needs.
