The Role

Where you fit In SLMT (Shell LNG Marketing & Trading) is the Global LNG Trading organization and the Commercial Freight Operator sits within STO which is the Operations arm of Shell Trading. Shell is global leader in LNG business. This is a global business with supply projects in both Atlantic and Asia Pacific basins and customers spread across Asia, Europe, Middle East, and South America. The nature this high value trade is evolving with the mix of long- and short-term contracts changing fast. What’s the role? Commercial LNG Operations provides commercial, logistical and administrative support to Shell Trading and is as such responsible on a day-to-day basis for the timely implementation and execution of freight and commercial transactions to ensure that all obligations arising from the LNG contract and time charter party (TCP) are met and carried out professionally. They work closely with Freight traders and Optimisation Trader to maximize the value-add through the application of economics and optimization skills for profitable operations and minimize the profit leakage from the flexibility and optionality embedded in the LNG contracts and Supply programs. Trading operations are also involved in the development of projects and new contracts. Due to the nature of physical trading operations, out of office hours working will be required. The LNG Operations team is responsible on a day-to-day basis be able to operate LNG ships under SLMT responsibility working closely with the chartering team. In addition to freight operations this incumbent will also be expected to gain necessary experience to implement and execute commercial deals.
Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Display visible leadership and commitment to HSSE within the team. Engage with external partners to echo and reinforce our strong focus on HSSE.
  • Ensure that LNG Operations fully complies with Shell’s internal standards incl. compliance and HSSE, paying special attention to HSSE hazards and risks that may have impact on vessels voyage or port operation.
  • Ensure that all obligations arising from the time charter parties are carried out, and that any necessary requirements are complied with.
  • Promote good relationships with Owner/Masters to continuously monitor and improve operational efficiency over and above TCP obligations. The incumbent will be expected to be a focal point to manage ship owner account.
  • Collaborate and support team with Marine Technical Advisor to establish and maintain relationships with Ports and Terminals to ensure issues are successfully resolved
  • Manage internal stakeholders e.g. Traders, Optimization Traders, Finance, STASCO Shipping and Global Operations Commercial Services.
  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders, counterparties and service providers, regulatory bodies, ship owners and agents.
  • Support team and provide guidance in understanding commercial impacts of marine technical actions making sure communications with the business are happening with correct information flow to aid Trading decisions.
  • Work closely and support team engaging with cargo operations team for deeper understanding of contracts
  • Ensure that all operational information is entered into Trading systems on time and with ‘First time right’ approach
  • Support team when liaising with counterparts to ensure smooth operations, avoid delays and minimize demurrage costs.
  • Efficiently manage the trade-offs between bunker consumption, boil-off and vessel speed (heel management) instructing the vessel’s Master accordingly.
  • Arrange Bunkers and OPL activities as required by the vessel
  • Devise optimal voyage plans working with the vessel and commercial colleagues.
  • Provide guidance for necessary freight invoicing work, diversion payments and clearances of accruals for both external and internal deals.
  • Close out the charter parties accounting for all costs, including TCP claims and obtain sign-off from freight traders.
  • Support short term initiatives to continuously improve the efficiency of all aspects of the commercial freight operations for the movement of cargoes and port interaction
  • Identify and exploit synergies with other parts of Shell Trading businesses.
  • Pro-actively close out operational related disputes, including Condition Of Use (COU) issues, with external and internal counterparts or support and guide less experienced team members where necessary.
  • Coach and support team members in Operations organizations.
  • Deliver against relevant SLMT and agreed Operations KPI's.
  • Actively engage to build a culture of Learner Mindset to allow for failing safely and avoiding repeat incidents.
  • Will be expected to take on the role of a Freight Owner focal which would require the incumbent to manage a vessel owners account and work with them closely.
  • Whilst key accountability lies with the regional team, the operator is expected to understand contractual constraints globally and collaborate with the Freight and Cargo operations team in other regions to resolve the issues.
  • The operator will handle global 24/7 trading activities and whilst colleagues are available in other time zones, the operator is expected to respond flexibly to requests outside of normal office hours.

Experience in commercial operations (preferably LNG) will be a strong advantage. A key criterion is to be able to operate within a non-standard environment where the counterparty requires and expects considerable support and at the same time be able to gently introduce standardization and efficiency. A high level of fluency in the English language, both written and spoken is required. This role is Dubai based therefore workdays are Monday to Friday.
