Job Description

The CHW Pipe Insulator is responsible for the proper application of insulation materials on chilled water (CHW) piping systems. This includes measuring, cutting, fitting, and sealing insulation materials to prevent condensation, improve energy efficiency, and protect piping systems. The ideal candidate will have experience with a variety of insulation types and cladding methods and understand the importance of proper installation in HVAC and industrial systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Read and interpret insulation specifications, blueprints, and mechanical drawings. Select appropriate insulation materials (e.g., elastomeric rubber, fiberglass, cellular glass, polyisocyanurate) for CHW piping systems. Measure, cut, and fit insulation materials to both straight runs and fittings (elbows, tees, valves, etc.). Install vapor barriers and jackets/cladding (PVC, aluminum, canvas, or metal) as required. Secure insulation using adhesives, tapes, wires, bands, or mechanical fasteners depending on material type. Seal all seams, joints, and penetrations to ensure vapor-tight installations and prevent condensation. Identify and insulate mechanical equipment connected to CHW systems (e.g., pumps, chillers, coils). Ensure insulation thickness and installation meets design specs, energy codes, and job-specific standards. Inspect and repair damaged insulation on existing systems as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Follow all safety guidelines and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent. 2-5 years of experience in mechanical insulation, preferably on chilled water or HVAC piping. Knowledge of chilled water systems and their insulation requirements (especially condensation control). Familiarity with hand tools used for cutting and installing insulation materials. Ability to interpret drawings and specifications for mechanical insulation work. Skilled in working with various insulation types and cladding/jacketing systems. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work. Good physical condition - ability to lift materials, climb ladders, and work in various environments. Reliable, punctual, and able to work both independently and in a team setting.
