Job Description

A carpenter reads blueprints to construct, install, repair, and maintain structures and fixtures, primarily using wood but also other materials like metal or plastic. Key duties include measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling materials using various tools and machinery, installing components such as window frames, doors, and cabinetry, ensuring adherence to safety regulations, and maintaining a clean work environment.

Core Responsibilities:

Blueprint Interpretation:

Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and building plans to understand project requirements, including dimensions and materials needed.

Material Preparation:

Measure, mark, and shape materials such as wood, plastic, or metal to specified dimensions using hand tools, power saws, or other machinery.

Construction & Installation:

Build and install structural frameworks, including walls, floors, roofs, and partitions.

Finishing & Repair:

Fit and install finishes like window frames, doors, door hardware, interior/exterior trim, and custom cabinetry. Remove and replace damaged or defective parts of structures.

Safety & Maintenance:

Follow all established safety rules, maintain a safe and clean work environment, and inspect and maintain tools and equipment.

Required Skills & Abilities:

Technical Skills:

Proficiency with hand tools (squares, levels, chisels) and power tools (saws, nail guns, routers, sanders).

Physical Demands:

Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and carry heavy materials (up to 75 pounds), and work from heights.

Problem-Solving:

Capacity for mental flexibility to find quick, reliable solutions for repairs and adjustments.

Teamwork:

Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with other construction workers.

Attention to Detail:

Accuracy and precision in measuring, cutting, and fitting materials are crucial for a successful outcome.

Work Environment:

Carpenters work in various environments, including workshops, construction sites, and client homes or businesses. The work can involve exposure to dust, noise, and working in cramped spaces or at heights. Protective clothing, such as safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats, may be required.
