Reports to: Head of Boarding Job Scope:
The role of Boarding House Nurse is to provide clinically effective, high-quality service of first aid and nursing care to boarding students. The Boarding House Nurse will also be responsible for the health and welfare of boarding students. She will work closely with the Boarding House Matron, Head of Boarding and Boarding Team. Main Duties and Responsibilities This not an exhaustive list of all duties/responsibilities. The responsibilities outlined may be modified by the Head of Boarding, upon mutual agreement, to reflect or anticipate changes in the role. General:
  • To be familiar with the National Minimum Boarding Standards for Boarding Schools (which national guidelines) and ensure compliance with them.
  • To undergo annual appraisal in line with the current system.
  • To attend house boarding staff meetings as required by the Head of Boarding.
  • To attend weekly meetings.
  • To be familiar with the school?s code of practice for health and safety, and its policies and procedures for countering bullying, substance misuse and child protection; to be willing to undertake additional training as required by the school.
  • To carry out other related duties as may be reasonably required from time to time by the Principal, Head of Boarding and School Doctor.
Medical:
  • To provide a high standard of nursing service within the regulatory guidelines to boarding students, members of the boarding team and any visitors while in the boarding houses, and to liaise with the School Clinic and Doctor to ensure provision of adequate medical care.
  • To promote the physical and mental health of all boarding students to enable them to achieve their educational potential.
  • To provide First Aid and Emergency treatment as necessary.
  • To identify, treat, and manage existing medical disorders and potential health problems within the boarding community.
  • To carry out medical examination, administer medications and perform healthcare procedures within the scope of the boarding houses.
  • To refer cases of accidents and illness to external hospitals or clinics, if needed.
  • To carry out biometric measurements of students on an annual basis as dictated by the School Clinic, including but not limited to BMI (height & weight) and eye screenings.
  • Manage all medical information of students and staff and maintain health records and medical files while preserving confidentiality and privacy.
  • To maintain and administer over the counter medications, patient-directed medications, prescribed medications, controlled medications, and any other medications or treatments in a safe and secure way, within the scope of a registered nurse and as per the treating doctor?s prescription.
  • To ensure care plans are developed and written for boarding students requiring them e.g., in cases of physical health needs i.e. asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, anaphylaxis, in liaison with boarding students, parents, and boarding team as appropriate.
  • To complete regular medication audits within the boarding house provision.
  • To assist any boarding student with significant mental health needs, in liaison with the school counselor and Inclusion team.
  • To follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.
  • To support the boarding team with strategies and provision planning for the students.
  • To ensure relevant training is provided to the boarding team in respect of the storing and administration of medicines.
  • To liaise with the School Clinic and Doctor to ensure that First Aid Providers in the boarding houses receive regular training.
  • To ensure that all medical supplies and equipment are available, well maintained, and intact.
  • To provide out of hours ?over the phone? advice and support to the boarding team if required.
  • To implement protocols and practices to combat communicable diseases in the boarding houses in compliance with the health authorities? directives and promote health and safety within the boarding community.
  • To collaborate with the school doctor and clinic to prepare the Boarding House Medical Policies and Protocols for regular review, and to organize any new policies that may need writing up prior to the annual review.
  • To participate actively to ensure implementation of all mandated policies and protocols in boarding, in collaboration with the Head of Boarding, School Clinic and Doctor, and school?s administrative authorities.
Training:
To provide training in medication administration and management of common medical conditions to boarding team members. Health Education:
  • To promote health education throughout the boarding house.
  • To provide regular health education to boarding students, boarding team, and parents on a variety of health topics throughout the school year.
  • To advise and train boarding team in infection control, hygiene, and various health topics.
  • To keep up to date with current health promotion initiatives.
Administration:
  • To maintain medical records accurately, confidentially, and safely.
  • To keeping nursing and medical records to a high standard.
  • To record dispensing and disposal following drug protocols.
  • To report relevant concerns/advice to relevant boarding team members and school staff members.
  • To support and assist the school clinic in feasible tasks and duties as required.
Management/Professional:
  • To adhere to the Nursing Code of Conduct & Ethics as dictated by the Dubai
  • Health Authorities at any time.
  • To continue CPD and CME to ensure that relevant professional development is undertaken.
Health and Safety:
  • To work safely and hygienically at all times within Health and Safety Guidelines and Policies.
  • To promote the health and safety in the boarding community and the wider school community as recommended by the health authorities, the health and safety committee.
Partnership Working:
  • To sustain and develop positive working partnerships with all areas of the school especially the School Clinic and the Operations team.
  • To implement/monitor and contribute to joint initiatives as required.
  • To create and develop links between the boarding school and wider school community.
Safeguarding and Child Protection:
  • To be thoroughly familiar with the school?s policies on Safeguarding and Child Protection, and professional guidelines.
  • To liaise with external visitors to the House such as delivery firms, contractors, and others whose necessary periodic access to the House must nevertheless be supervised for safeguarding reasons.

  • Nursing Degree
  • DHA approved
Experience and Competencies:
  • At least 3 years nursing experience, preferably in paediatrics in a school, clinic or hospital setting
  • A positive, flexible, ?can do? work ethic
  • Be enthusiastic, patient, and empathetic when working with children and young people who come from a diverse range of cultures.
  • Have confident and warm communication skills.
  • Be practical and keep a cool head in an emergency
  • Be tactful, discreet and a good listener

  • Be a team player who demonstrates maturity and professionalism

Hours of work: Saturday to Thursday working week | Saturday & Sunday ? day shift (Monday to Thursday 4.30pm to 11.30pm)
