(What the job involves) Business development jobs are becoming more and more relevant to the hair and beauty industry largely because there is so much scope and competition between products. Typically you will be expected to carry out the following duties:
  • Develop a sales strategy for the business
  • Conduct regular market analysis studies - gathering intelligence on competitor brands, consumer trends with the aim of ensuring the company maintains a strong competitive edge
  • Identify new opportunities and channels to increase the business\'s commercial success. Business development strategy may highlight potential geographical areas to sell the services into, additional sectors, various business types, clients etc.
  • Create and submit business proposals - this is an integral part of the job and will involve you both writing formal business proposals and presenting the business in person.
  • Negotiate and close business deals
  • Generate leads - A program of ongoing lead generation is therefore essential
  • Account management - Maintaining a positive ongoing client relationship is a vital part of the job
  • Product expertise - it\'s vital you have a thorough understanding of our brand and product use, the benefits it offers, ingredients and also be fully up-to-date on any product improvements or new lines
  • Attend trade shows and industry events - attending beauty shows is an essential part of the job so you can network, generate new client leads and keep abreast of the latest products coming into the market
Skills and Personal Qualities The following qualities and skills are needed
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Effective strategic thinking
  • Well organized - an essential part of the job as you\'ll have meetings to attend (possibly in different areas of the country), presentations to give etc. The importance of being on time cannot be underestimated!
  • Industry contacts - although it is possible to enter the hair and beauty industry from another sector in a sales capacity it will stand you in good stead if you have already worked within the industry perhaps as a field sales rep and therefore come with your own contacts.
  • Target Oriented - you will have sales targets to reach
  • Determination - One of the most challenging aspects of the job will be getting through to new clients as they can be notoriously busy. Demonstrating persistence will therefore be key
  • Commercial acumen
  • Presentation skills - the ability to present in a highly professional manner to clients, senior executives and buyers why they should use our service and products
  • Ability to open new accounts - effective negotiation and closing skill
Entry requirements It is not always necessary to have a recognized beauty and/or hair qualification to become a business development manager. However, having experience of working in the sector is generally considered a bonus as is a passion for hair, skincare, beauty and spa services. Qualifications and/or experience in marketing and/or business management are advantageous. Previous sales and account management experience in the industry is a requirement. Potential Salary and Benefits Business development manager can expect to earn a basic salary plus commission. Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
