The Anesthesia Veterinary Technician is responsible for assisting veterinarians in the administration, monitoring, and recovery of anesthesia in animals undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures. The technician plays a critical role in ensuring animal safety, comfort, and proper pain management throughout the anesthetic process.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare animals for anesthesia by performing pre-anesthetic exams and diagnostic tests (e.g., bloodwork, ECG).
Administer and monitor anesthesia under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
Accurately calculate and administer anesthetic agents, analgesics, sedatives, and emergency drugs.
Set up, operate, and maintain anesthesia machines and monitoring equipment.
Monitor patient vitals (heart rate, respiration, temperature, SpO?, BP) during procedures and respond promptly to changes.
Maintain detailed and accurate anesthetic records throughout the procedure.
Assist in recovery and post-operative care of animals, ensuring they regain consciousness safely and comfortably.
Clean, sterilize, and prepare surgical and anesthesia-related equipment and instruments.
Ensure adherence to safety and infection control protocols.
Maintain inventory of anesthetic supplies and equipment.
Provide training or guidance to junior staff or students when required.
Communicate clearly with veterinarians, clients, and team members regarding anesthetic plans and patient status.
Qualifications:
Diploma or degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent qualification.
Certification or experience in veterinary anesthesia is preferred.
Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a veterinary clinical setting with a focus on anesthesia.
Strong understanding of anesthetic protocols, pharmacology, and emergency procedures.
Excellent animal handling and restraint skills.
Proficiency in using monitoring and anesthesia equipment.
Detail-oriented with excellent documentation and observation skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
Working Conditions:
May require long hours, weekend or on-call shifts.
Physically demanding: lifting animals, standing for long periods.
Exposure to controlled substances, zoonotic diseases, and biohazards.
