Anatomic pathologists have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
Anatomic Pathologist Job Requirements:
- Examining biopsies and studying tissue samples under a microscope to identify abnormalities in cells or tissues
- Communicating test results to physicians and other healthcare professionals in written reports
- Identifying disease on biopsy samples using special stains, dyes, or radiation to reveal abnormal growth of cells
- Performing autopsies to determine cause of death when the cause is unclear from an initial examination of the body
- Preparing tissue samples for examination using various staining techniques to highlight cell structures
- Conducting research to increase understanding of disease processes and develop new diagnostic techniques and treatments.
- Examining specimens under a microscope to identify diseases such as cancer or parasites that may be present in small amounts
- Reviewing patient medical records to establish a diagnosis and determine whether additional tests are needed
- Designing research studies to test new drugs or treatments.

- An anatomic pathologist must first earn a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a science-related field, such as biology, chemistry or anatomy.
- After earning a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree, an aspiring anatomic pathologist must complete a medical degree. Medical school takes four years and includes classroom and laboratory instruction. During the first two years, students study basic science courses, such as anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology and pathology. The final two years are spent learning clinical skills, such as patient care, medical ethics and communication.

- Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in biomedical science or a related field.
- Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree preferred
- Diploma in Anatomic Pathology
- Experience in anatomical pathology
- Strong communication skills
